lip service

In the last few years, I’ve become obsessed with lipstick. I’ve amassed quite a collection in a seemingly short amount of time; before college, I only wore lip balm and I detested red lipstick. Oh, how things change! Red lips have now become a staple in my beauty routine, and I’m always on the lookout for the next chic shade. Pictured here are some of my favorites, though sadly there are a few I rarely use (when are you ever going to wear dark purple or frosty silver?). I’m quite the drug store beauty junkie (Revlon = ♥), but I also adore brands like Lime Crime, which will deservingly receive its own post in the near future!

Follow the break for all the lipstick deets!

dripping in jewel tones

Yesterday morning I took an early trip to Whole Foods and in the midst of searching for produce and poultry I somehow wound up in the beauty aisle (go figure). Amongst all the organic beauty products I spotted a rainbow of Zoya nail polishes and was instantly drawn to the eye-catching display. After staring at the bottles for what seemed like forever, I finally chose the blue violet Pinta and the sparkly teal Akyra.

I’d never tried Zoya before, and I found the dried consistency pleasantly sleek and slippery. Akyra is a bit sheerer than I expected but Pinta went on perfectly with a few swipes. I’ve been attracted to these opulent hues since December when I asked for a tube of Illamasqua lipstick in Kontrol for Christmas. I recently donned it at my new job, eliciting more bewildered stares than compliments. (I wouldn’t always recommend it for day to day wear.) Others’ opinions notwithstanding, Kontrol delivers a dramatic and satisfyingly creamy layer of pigment. I can’t wait to try more unconventional colors (Apocalips anyone?), and with my latest obsession of reading beauty blogs I’m looking forward to posting in-depth reviews of products new and beloved alike.

PS: Thanks to everyone who has stuck with Mode and the Like through my dry spell. More posts to come soon!

the rainbow connection

Many people who know me are aware that my favorite makeup brand is Urban Decay.  Every product they offer is of really high quality, and their assortment of colors for eyeshadows and liners is unbelievably rich and vast.  They are cruelty-free (meaning no animal testing, hooray!!) and many of their products are vegan (meaning no animal-derived products) as well.

I discovered Urban Decay in my junior year of high school; as I scanned the Macy’s beauty kiosks for prom makeup, I spotted Urban Decay’s alluring purple stand and scooted right over.  It seemed to have the most personality and liveliness compared to all the other cosmetic brands.  And believe you me, whenever an UD beauty consultant decides to give you a free makeover, you come out looking (and feeling) like the coolest girl in town. Guaranteed.

I was so excited to see the new 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliners in jewel tones and crisp neutrals, as I frequently use the little bottles of liquid liner yet wish they withstood wetness.  Yesterday I indulged and ordered three of the liners from Beauty.com, a one-stop shop for drugstore finds and cosmetics.  I picked the bright raspberry pink Woodstock, the sparkly golden brown Smog, and (of course) the blackest of blacks, Perversion.  Now I anxiously await their arrival in the mail, and I can’t wait to try out the other colors in the future!  (I already have my eye on the shimmery teal Siren and the iridescent grey Revolver.)
